Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a dentistry specialization involving the correction of teeth and jaw positioning. In addition to making some people self-conscious, crooked teeth are more difficult to clean, increasing your risk for tooth decay or periodontal disease. Orthodontic treatment offers a way to get straighter teeth and improved aesthetics while helping you maintain a healthier mouth.

Who needs orthodontics?

Anyone who has a bite issue or crooked or crowded teeth can benefit from orthodontic treatment. Common conditions that lead to orthodontic treatments include:

Overbite

An overbite is when the upper front teeth stick out over the lower teeth. Some people refer to overbite as “buck teeth.''

Underbite

If your lower teeth are too far forward or the upper teeth are positioned too far back in your mouth, you have an underbite.

Crossbite

If you have a crossbite, you have one or more upper teeth that don’t quite reach the lower teeth when you bite your teeth together normally.

Gaps and spaces

Many people receive orthodontics when they have large spaces between their teeth. Orthodontics can help align the teeth and minimize the gaps.

Crowding

If you seem to have more teeth than your mouth can hold, you have crowding. Orthodontics, sometimes combined with tooth extraction, can relieve the crowding and straighten teeth.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Spectrum Dental Care utilizes different types of orthodontic appliances to move your teeth, retrain muscles, or affect the growth of your jaw as needed. Some appliances are removable while others are fixed in your mouth. Orthodontic appliances place gentle pressure on your teeth and jaw.

Fixed orthodontic appliances include metal and ceramic braces. These consist of brackets that are affixed to your teeth and are connected with wires and bands. As adjustments are made periodically, the braces gradually move your teeth into their ideal positions.

Common removable appliances include:

  • Invisalign®️
  • ClearCorrect®️
  • Retainers
  • Expanders

The experienced team chooses a treatment approach based on your needs and the type of dental issue you need to address.

What are Invisalign and ClearCorrect?

Invisalign and ClearCorrect are removable orthodontic appliances that improve your smile over time without the discomfort and maintenance of fixed metal braces. The Invisalign and ClearCorrect systems use removable, clear aligners to fix crooked or misaligned teeth.

Both solutions are an appropriate treatment option for underbites, overbites, gaps, and crowded teeth — but, they can’t be used for all circumstances. The experienced team at Spectrum Dental Care helps determine if clear aligners are the right treatment for you.
